What Is the Romans Road to Salvation?
The Romans Road is a collection of verses from the book of Romans that explains our need for a Savior, God’s love for us, and the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Each passage helps lead into the next, creating a simple way to walk through the gospel.
The printable includes five main points with short summaries and Scripture references. Below, you’ll find the full Bible verses in the New International Version (NIV), along with a brief explanation of each point.
1. We All Have Sinned — Romans 3:23
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
— Romans 3:23 (NIV)
The first stop reminds us that we all need God’s grace. Every one of us has sinned, and none of us can meet God’s perfect standard on our own.
When talking with children, this can open a conversation about what sin means and why we need forgiveness. We can be honest about our own mistakes, too. God’s grace is something we all need.
2. God Offers Life — Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
— Romans 6:23 (NIV)
Sin has a serious consequence, but this verse also gives us wonderful hope: God offers eternal life through Jesus. Notice that it is called a gift. Salvation is something we receive through Christ, rather than something we can earn by being good enough.
For children, the idea of receiving a gift can be a helpful starting point for understanding grace.
3. Jesus Died for Us — Romans 5:8
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
— Romans 5:8 (NIV)
God didn’t wait for us to become perfect before showing His love. Jesus died for us while we were still sinners.
This is the heart of the good news. God’s love reaches us right where we are, and through Jesus, He has made a way for us to be forgiven and have a relationship with Him. We can come to Him with our struggles and our need for forgiveness, trusting Him to change us as we follow Him.
4. Believe & Confess — Romans 10:9–10
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
— Romans 10:9–10 (NIV)
These verses describe responding to Jesus with faith: believing that God raised Him from the dead and confessing Him as Lord. Calling Jesus Lord means recognizing His authority and choosing to follow His lead. This is a personal response of trust that shapes how we live.
As you read together, leave room for questions. You don’t have to rush through every point in one conversation.
5. Call on Jesus — Romans 10:13
“for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”
— Romans 10:13 (NIV)
What a hopeful promise! We can call on Jesus in faith, trusting Him to save us. We don’t need impressive words to come to Him.
This final stop is a reminder of the invitation to respond to God’s grace. If someone wants to learn more, keep the conversation going, open the Bible together, and help them connect with a pastor or trusted Christian teacher.
