You may know that October is SIDS Awareness Month. According to a recent article on Today<\/a>, SIDS and other sleep related deaths are the third leading cause of infant mortality in the US. After the first month of a baby\u2019s life, they are the leading cause.<\/div>\n

I wanted to help us spread the word about safe sleep and share how to create a safe sleep environment for your baby with these Safe Sleep Tips from HALO<\/a>. <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Safe Sleep Tips<\/b><\/div>\n
Share these tips with all caregivers to ensure safe sleep for your baby:<\/div>\n
ALWAYS<\/div>\n
- \n
- Place baby to sleep on his or her back at naptime and at night time.<\/li>\n
- Room-share, but don\u2019t bed share; the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend against bed sharing as it can lead to an increased risk for accidental suffocation.<\/li>\n
- Use a crib or bassinet that meets current safety standards with a firm mattress that fits snugly and is covered with only a tight-fitting crib sheet.<\/li>\n
- Remove all soft bedding and toys from your baby\u2019s sleep area (this includes loose blankets, bumpers, pillows and positioners). The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests using a wearable blanket instead of loose blankets to keep your baby warm.<\/li>\n
- Offer a pacifier when putting baby to sleep. If breastfeeding, introduce pacifier after one month or after breastfeeding has been established.<\/li>\n
- Breastfeed, if possible, but when finished, put your baby back to sleep in his or her separate safe sleep area alongside your bed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\nNEVER<\/div>\n
- \n
- Never put your baby to sleep on any soft surface (adult beds, sofas, chairs, water beds, quilts, sheep skins etc.)<\/li>\n
- Never dress your baby too warmly for sleep; keep room temperature 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.<\/li>\n
- Never allow anyone to smoke around your baby or take your baby into a room or car where someone has recently smoked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
