DIY Mad Scientist Costume and Scientist Badge Free Printable

My oldest son is all about DIY Halloween costumes and this year he decided to be a Mad Scientist! We had most of the supplies needed to put together this awesome DIY Mad Scientist Costume. The Mad Scientist Costume is a really easy costume to put together last minute too.

The only things I purchased was a lab coat found at the thrift store for $0.50, fake mustache and some plastic test tubes on Amazon for $5.

DIY Mad Scientist Costume – What you need:

slacks/pants
button up dress shirt
bow tie
safety goggles
lab coat
hair gel for crazy hairdo
scientist badge (free printable below)
badge holder and clip
glasses (optional)
fake mustache (optional)
charcoal dust (optional)
test tubes or beakers (optional)

How we put our DIY Mad Scientist Costume together:

My son already had black slacks and a grey button up shirt. Little brother owned a bow tie that fit him. He already owned fake glasses but if you don’t I suggest getting some 3-d glasses and removing their lenses. I usually keep our 3-D glasses when we go to the movies. Safety goggles came from grandpa’s work shop. The lab coat size small was found at thrift store. If you can’t find a lab coat at your thrift store you can make one from an adult white button up shirt. Fake mustache was found at the grocery store and plastic test tubes from Amazon.

I filled the test tubes with colored water. We opted for an explosion went off look and used our activated charcoal capsules; I opened the capsules and smudged it all over his face. You could use black face paint instead but the the charcoal dust looks more authentic, in my opinion.

Free Printable Scientist Badge:

I designed an official looking Scientist badge with help from my son. I printed, cut out and taped it to an old work badge (you can find badge holders & clips at most stores or Amazon). We loved the way the badge turned out! I am sharing this badge with you too!

Some options for the badge is print a picture of your child to put over the fingerprint. Also, you can either write in your child’s name or use an editing program to type in their name. To add text you will need to save the file and open it in an editing program. First, download and save the pdf file. Then you will need to open the file in a program like Adobe Reader or Word, and add text box(s) to add your text to the badge(s).

This badge would be great for your DIY Mad Scientist costume for Halloween, dress-up play or for a Scientist Themed party. I think these badges would make a great party favor! I have shared a printable with 1 badge on the page and a printable with 9 badges on the page (for parties).

Homemade Makeup Brush Cleaner with essential oils

When was the last time you gave your makeup brushes a good deep cleaning? I’m sharing with you a simple homemade makeup brush cleaner that is easy to make and uses common non-toxic ingredients!

Now that I have found this great homemade/diy cleaner I won’t be so lazy when it comes to cleaning my makeup brushes. You can use just an oil and soap to clean your brushes but I really like that this cleaner includes essential oils with cleansing and purifying properties for extra clean and purified brushes.

It’s really a good idea to do a deep clean like the one I’m sharing once a month. This will remove old makeup, bacteria and other yucky stuff in your makeup brush bristles. If you have oily skin or are prone to breakouts you can do this deep clean weekly or every other week.

I just want to mention it is recommend to at least wipe your brush off with a clean towel in between uses daily.

Homemade Makeup Brush Cleaner You Will Need:

dirty makeup brushes

small bowl

wash cloth or paper towels

2 tablespoons oil (extra-virgin olive oil or fractionated coconut oil)

2 tablespoons dish soap or castile soap

5 drops Melaleuca essential oil

5 drops Grapefruit essential oil (lemon or lavender are good alternatives)

warm water from sink

Directions:

1. Add oil, soap and essential oils into a small bowl.

2. Swirl your brush in the mixture for 30 seconds, or until you see the makeup stored in your brush start to come out.

3. Rub in a circular motion on the palm of your hand to release all the makeup from the brush.

4. Rinse the brush under warm water (NOT HOT). Swirl brush bristles in your palm until clean, and the water runs clear.

5. Wipe brush bristle gently with towel and try to get out excess water.

6. Shape bristles to original sharp and set on towel for 4 hours or until dry. To prevent fluffy brushes from losing their shape roll fluffy brush bristles in a towel tightly while drying.

I hope you give this homemade and non-toxic makeup brush cleaner a try. If you have not been cleaning your brushes regularly you may see improvement to your skin!

I’m sharing a perfect bite size treat that is sure to please any chocolate lover, Gluten-Free Fudgy Mini Brownie Bites! My son made a special request for brownies in his lunchbox this year and I was happy to oblige. Apparently, he did not want my classic brownies but a mini cupcake version, talk about particular!

I decided to make him fudgy mini brownie bites with chocolate chips melted down in the batter, which give the brownies a great fudgy taste!

These brownies are fudgy, moist and just plain delicious; really everyone loves them… what’s not to love! My recipe makes exactly 1 pan if you use a mini cupcake pan an fill them 3/4 full. Mini cupcake pans are perfect to make brownie bites and are a great lunchbox snack. Theses mini brownie bites are good to store refrigerated for 5 days and mine usually last all week, as long as I keep my husband from eating them! Okay, I’m guilty of eating several too! Perhaps, make an extra batch just to safe.

Gluten-Free Fudgy Mini Brownie Bites

Delicious moist and fudgy brownie bites! So good it is almost impossible to eat just one!

Ingredients

1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cups sugar
1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 large eggs
1/2 cup gluten-free all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum
1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Preheat oven to 325°F.
Melt butter in a medium size heat-safe bowl in microwave or on stove top in saucepan.
Once melted, Add chocolate chips, cocoa powder, sugar, eggs (one at a time), and vanilla to mixture.
Add gf all-purpose flour, xanthan gum and salt to mix until mixture is smooth. Continue to mix for another minute to ensure the mixture is smooth.
Spoon the batter evenly into the mini cupcake pan, about 3/4 full.
Bake for 15- 20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Notes

Brownie bites will keep for about 5 days in the refrigerator. They also freeze well if stored properly.

I was inspired to make this dip from my latest trip to Walmart. They had new gluten-free products out on display, Glutino Animal Crackers and Udi’s Chicken Alfredo! I picked up both because I am always looking for new products for my family to try, my husband and son have Celiac disease and must eat gluten free. I love how Walmart is really trying to cater to those who have to eat gluten free by widening their selection of products and offering them at affordable prices!

Glutino Animal Crackers are great and tasty on there own but I wanted to kick them up a notch with a special dip just for them! Here enters the Chocolate Chip Dip recipe!

Not only is this dip a tasty crowd pleaser but it can be made in less than 5 minutes! My kids eat this dip up and think it is great suprise when I pull it out for them. The dip and animal crackers are perfect for an after school snack or packed in a lunchbox! This would also be great to serve at any party but you will probably need to double or triple the recipe based on how many guest you are having and how much they love animal crackers and dip! If you want a healthier option for this treat consider serving the dip with apples or other fruits. My kids like it serverd with apples or strawberries!

Chocolate Chip Dip

A tasty addition to animal crackers, graham crackers or fruit! Great for snacks or parties!

Ingredients

8 oz. cream cheese softened
½ cup butter softened
¼ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
½ cup powdered sugar
1 cup miniature chocolate chips

Instructions

In a medium size bowl, mix cream cheese and butter until mixed completely.
Add sugars and vanilla to mix; beat until smooth.
Stir in chocolate chips.

Notes

Serve with animal crackers, graham crackers, fruit
